Bill Lawson tells a lovely story about Pabay in the days when it was busy with people and, more importantly for some, the distinctive smell of whisky. The excise man paid regular visits to make sure that there were no illegal stills in operation. So the ferryman set his sail in a particular way to warn the islanders that the authorities were on their way. Thus, the stills went undetected for many years until the ferryman’s son forgot the signal. The rest, as they say, is history.
