Description

The calm before the storm sounds as though it might just be another one of those old wives tales. However, it’s a phenomenon that has been recognised for millennia, and does have some basis in meteorology. Storms are fuelled by warm moist air which they draw from their immediate surroundings, including from the area in front of the direction in which it is moving. The movement of this warm moist air into the storm system creates an area of lower pressure behind it. As the air rises, the moisture is siphoned into the storm system until the air is discharged, becoming warmer and drier as it is drawn back into the low pressure area it previously created. This stable air is then what causes the calm before the storm. Now you know!
