Description

The place name Bosta derives from a Norse word meaning ‘small farm’ and gives us a little window in the history of this beautiful part of Great Bernera off the west coast of Lewis.  Contrary to popular opinion, much of the Norse occupation of the Outer Isles was peaceful.  Outsiders arrived in small numbers, integrated with the local community through marriage and trade and quickly became native islanders.  On this particular day, the beach at Bosta echoed that peaceful existence.
