Description

This was my second trip to St Kilda and this time I was determined to explore more of the main island – on my previous trip, I had remained almost exclusively in the village. However, I couldn’t resist a short detour to the wonderful ruins and renovated houses of the Main Street. As you can see, it was another warm, dry day on Hiorta and, as I passed this little snicket, I was immediately taken by the wheelbarrow resting against the wall. Somehow, for me, it seemed to epitomise the extraordinarily hard life that the St Kildans led for all those years before they finally decided that enough was enough. Despite the beautiful day, it was a very poignant moment but one that passed quickly as the delights of the rest of the island began to call to me.
