Description

As with anything where there is no written record to attest to purpose of an ancient stone construction, there are varying theories about The House of the Fairies.  It’s current name brings to mind those wonderful tales of old where an innocent, having overindulged in a drinking establishment, wandered off the track on the way home and entered another realm where time passed at a different rate.  However, there is a strong feeling that this is in fact a souterrain, from the French sous terrain, meaning under ground, the name given by archaeologists to a type of underground structure associated mainly with the European Atlantic Iron Age.  They do not appear to have been used for burial or ritual purposes and it has been suggested that they were food stores or hiding places during times of strife, although some, like this one, had very obvious entrances.
