Description

Mist hangs above a loch (lake) primarily due to evaporation fog, sometimes called steam fog or lake smoke, which occurs when relatively warm water interacts with cooler air above it. The warm water of the loch evaporates into the air immediately above it, creating a thin layer of warm, moist air. When this air mixes with the colder air above, it cools, forcing the moisture to condense into tiny water droplets. This phenomenon is especially common in autumn and early morning when water retains summer warmth while the air temperature drops rapidly at night. Since cold air is denser and heavier than warm air, it flows down surrounding mountainsides into the glen and settles over the water. This cool, heavy air traps moisture, leading to the mist.
