Description

Martin Martin, in his 1698 travelogue, ‘A Late Voyage to St Kilda’, described how St Kilda men would be required to stand on one leg on the top of the Mistress Stone in order to demonstrate their worthiness to get married or, as they said at the time, take a wife. St Kildan men developed a head for heights, and large muscular feet and ankles, as they scoured the cliffs for birds and eggs. Nonetheless, this must have been a chilling experience, especially in bad weather.
