Description

A kelp bed is like a myriad of bodiless fingers, sometimes swaying rhythmically with the ebb and flow of the tide, and at other times reaching, striving, stretching to breach the water’s surface. The fronds host an unimaginable multitude of plants and animals, both predators and prey alike, and represent some of the most diverse and productive ecosystems on the planet. Off the west coast of Lewis, they cling strenuously to the sea floor, resisting the relentless action of the Atlantic rollers, remaining rooted to where they rightly belong – in many ways, an apt analogue for the island folk.
