Description

Fulmars, like albatrosses, swans, puffins, and golden eagles, mate for life. I caught this pair on top of a cleit on St Kilda on my second visit to the islands. I can’t say if they had chosen this site for their nest, rather than a narrow ledge on the precipitous cliffs that surround Hiort. Either way, fulmars are known to be faithful to their nesting sites as well, returning year after year to the same spot to raise their young. They generally forage within 300-400 miles of their nest, but Adam Nicholson talks of one celebrated fulmar who flew from his colony on the Shetlands to the Grand Banks, off the east coast to Canada, to feed on the rich fishing grounds there, a round trip of over 5000 miles in just three weeks!
