Don’t let this idyllic scene fool you for a second. Although there was a strong swell running on the trip across, all was calm in Village Bay. We had a light northerly, and the bay was probably one of the quietest places on St Kilda that day. On my first trip, however, there was a strong southerly blowing, and we had been turned back the previous day by the National Trust ranger who said there was too great a swell in the bay to land safely. Even the following day, it was nearly 2 metres at the pier. When a strong south-easterly is blowing, the only thing that can land on St Kilda is a helicopter, and even it has been known to turn back.
