Description

The islands of St Kilda are all that remains of a huge ring volcano that was active 60 million years ago.  It’s not surprising then that the terrain is, in places, precipitous.  However, the St Kildans saw a near-vertical slope as no more than a minor inconvenience when it came to constructing cleits.  Consequently, they perch precariously on the most unlikely of sites, much like a starling on a telegraph wire in a high wind.  This one felt as though it might slip down the hill at any moment – but I didn’t detect any movement as I did my pencil sketch!
