Description

When the tide is low, no matter what the time of year or what the weather is doing, you will often see the cockle pickers out on the sand at Seilebost – bright yellow and orange blips bobbing up and down like fishing floats. Occasionally, I’ll watch them through the binoculars we use for identifying the waders. They seem to spend their entire time bent over, with a rake, scraping at the sand to find the cockles. I can’t imagine how they manage to stand up straight when the tide turns and it’s time to return to the road with their harvest.
