Description

The word azure derives from the Persian word lazward or lajward, which refers to the place in Turkestan where blue lapis lazuli stone was collected. It passed through Arabic, Medieval Latin, and Old French, where it was changed to azure because the letter l at the beginning was falsely interpreted as the definite article, equivalent to the in English. When it entered the English language, it evolved from a place name to describe the deep blue stone, and finally the clear blue colour of the sky.
