Description

You might think this is a strange place for a boatyard as it sits on the landward side of the road above the harbour at Stocinis on the east side of Harris. It is certainly more than a stone’s throw till you get to clear water. However, my grandfather’s boatyard was in a metal shed behind a church on the west highland coast and he managed fine from there. And there’s another boatyard along the coast at Flodabagh. It too is next to the road and not the sea. Perhaps boat building is something that defies off-island logic.
