When you look out across the Atlantic from the west coast, you have nothing against which to register the sheer scale of what you see. This day, it had been raining continuously – the sort of really wet rain that clings to the landscape like an unwelcome guest. The first sign that it might relent was the merest chink in the heavy clouds. You could not tell if it was near or far but the clear, bright light that poured through confirmed that better weather was on its way.
