Description

Dùn is at the southern end of Village Bay and protected the settlement from the prevailing south westerly winds. Dùn is the Gaelic word for a fort and an old map shows its location at the seaward end of the island although it has been long since been eroded by the fierce elements that beat down on St Kilda. The island is separated from Hirta by a narrow strait or caolas – so the Soay Sheep never got to graze there. Consequently, the vegetation is greener. It has been suggested that Dùn was, at one time, connected to Hirta by a natural stone arch. One theory is that it was demolished by a galleon fleeing the defeat of the Spanish Armada. More likely is that those fierce winter storms destroyed the stone arch.
