Description

Sea stacs are extraordinary things, no matter where they are located. This one is situated a short distance off the beach at the township of Dalbeg on the west coast of Lewis. Beyond is the wide, and often wild, North Atlantic. Even on a relatively calm day, the narrow neck of the bay forces the waves higher, crashing amongst a wash of white foam and aquamarine sea. And when there’s a gale force South Westerly blowing, the waves break right over the top of the 50 foot stac. Awesome! Its Gaelic name means rock of the stranger. Folklore suggests that local people used to lure ships onto the reefs beyond and take whatever washed ashore.
