Description

Crofting is a hard and tenuous living, especially on the islands where the land is poorer and the elements harsher than elsewhere. In years gone by, the number of sheep on the hill would be numbered in thousands where now they are counted in their hundreds, sometime less. Subsidies maintain a way of life that might otherwise have passed into history. So it’s not surprising that the large agricultural buildings you might see on the Black Isle or in Fife are not a feature of the farming landscape on Lewis. Farms here are much more modest affairs with lean-tos added to lean-tos and all manner of things put to use as places of storage. This yard seems to have acquired a fish farm tub and is even using an old caravan as a hen house!
