Description

The Outer Hebrides was, until 1260, part of the Norse kingdom of the Suðreyjar.  It has been said that during this time, Norse was the language of the law and Gaelic was the everyday speaking language.  Consequently, it’s not surprising that there is a strong Norse influence in our place names.  Geodha is actually the Norse word for a cut or cleft in the cliff.  And this particular geodha is named after Martin Martin who wrote “A Description of the Western Islands of Scotland” about his travels through the Outer Hebrides in the late 17th Century.
