There is something sobering about wandering through any graveyard. And yet, that experience is even more poignant on St Kilda as none of the gravestones are marked – they are just plain pieces of stone set in the ground to mark the passing of someone dearly beloved. However, the markings on each stone are unique and so, in their own way, record the lives and deeds of those that lie below. And in a time past, there is little doubt that each of the villagers would have known exactly who lay where.
