Description

A small number of years ago, we had our first experience of a haar on the west coast, a meteorological feature more commonly associated with the eastern coastline of the United Kingdom. A haar is a sea fog, sometimes called a sea fret or a sea roke, where warm air passes over cold sea water, causing the moisture in the air to condense, and forming a sea mist. It is generally blown onshore by a light breeze – a stronger wind would disperse the mist, and prevent more fog forming. It is a strange encounter. One moment, you can be bathed in bright sun, the next, eerie tendrils are consuming your fingertips! This was one such day.
