Description

St Kilda is possibly the windiest place in Britain. There are gales for nearly a quarter of the year. To put this into perspective, the average wind speed in most parts of England is somewhere around 10mph, which on the Beaufort Scale rates as a 3, that’s to say, a gentle breeze. The wind doesn’t officially become a gale until you get Force 8, or 39-46 mph. And you can imagine that St Kilda doesn’t stop at ordinary gales. So, the notion that there might be a storm brewing on St Kilda isn’t much of a stretch really!
