Description

St Kilda is one of only forty Dual World Heritage sites on the planet.  It gained this enviable status for its natural history and its cultural landscape.  Possibly one of the most iconic images of life on St Kilda, before it was finally evacuated in 1930, was of the men of the island conducting their daily parliament.  Together, they considered the work to be done that day according to each family’s abilities and divided up the resources according to their needs. Everything was done for the common good. No one led the meeting and each man had a right to speak.  This notion of a free society influenced Enric Miralles’ vision for the new Scottish Parliament Building, opened in October 2004.
