Description

The Norse mill at Breacleit on Great Bernera is a short walk from the centre of the village, but well worth the walk. Perhaps not as well restored as the mill at Shawbost on the west side of Lewis but, in some ways, more magical. You are almost certain to the be the only people there when you visit. And its slightly more remote location enables your imagination to take over. This mill is situated right beside Loch Roag. There is a narrow sound with a deeper water mooring next to stepped rocks. It is just a small step to visualise a Viking long boat tied up alongside, sacks of grain being unloaded and people of the time exchanging news and friendly insults. Truly, an exceptional place.
