Description

The Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are a spectacular natural light display in the night sky, appearing as dancing ribbons of green, pink, and violet. They are caused by Solar wind, a continuous, high-speed stream of charged particles, mainly electrons, protons, and alpha particles, which are emitted by the Sun’s corona, its hot outer atmosphere. As these particles enter the Earth’s magnetic field and strike atmospheric gases like oxygen and nitrogen, they ionise them and cause them to emit light. The best places to see them are in the northern latitudes. We’re still waiting!
