Description

Ask a little person to do a painting of the sea, and they will invariably paint it blue. This is because they observe it as blue in daily life, due to water absorbing red light and scattering blue light, and because blue is the standard cultural representation for water in cartoons, books, and art. It is a simple, symbolic colour choice learned from their environment. Yet, if we shed this preconception, we quickly realise that the sea is rarely blue, and when it is, a passing cloud or a change in the light quickly paints it a different colour. Looking out our windows, we see more greens than blues. Tomorrow, I might as easily write the opposite!
