Description

Although the Outer Hebrides is renowned, geologically, for Lewisian Gneiss, much of Harris is actually composed of a beautiful pink Porphyritic Granite, an igneous rock formed approximately 1600 to 2500 million years ago. Porphyritic refers to rock where there is a difference in the size of the crystals from which it is formed. Initially, magma is cooled slowly deep in the crust, creating large crystal grains. Later, the magma is cooled rapidly at relatively shallow depth or as it erupts from a volcano, creating smaller grains that are usually invisible to the naked eye.
