Description

The Gaelic name of this stone pile is Stac na Gall and harks back to a time when local people alledgedly lit fires on the headland to lure passing ships onto the skerries offshore. Strangers, it seems, washed ashore along with the ill-gotten plunder. During the summer months, a pair of Oyster Catchers lay claim to the top of the stac, always one in evidence as though guarding something very precious. It might be a nest although it is surely too exposed a site to select for raising a young brood. Perhaps, like the people of these islands, the Oyster Catchers of the Outer Hebrides are a hardy bunch, happy in all weathers.
