Description

The Soay sheep on St Kilda are what is called a primitive breed. They have been on the islands for possibly as much as 4,000 years. They are also closer to wild breeds, such as the mouflon, than domestic sheep, and are less than half the size. They don’t require shearing on an annual basis. Instead, they moult, or cast, their top coat as the weather warms. Islanders collected the wool to spin and weave into fabric. Nowadays, they are counted each year but otherwise continue to live and breed without human interference. I’m not sure what this lady found to graze on the top of this cleit!
