Description

The Norse people who invaded many parts of Scotland, and claimed some of them for their own, have left their mark on the Outer Hebrides in so many ways: the place names; the ruined mills that pepper the landscape; the deserted villages along the coasts; the design of some of the older black houses. However, their legacy runs deeper into the nature of the people: hardy, determined, courageous. On occasion, sitting on a bench on the Croft 6 headland, I stare out to sea and wonder at the bravery of people who would sail off into the wide blue yonder, with no certain knowledge of what lay beyond the horizon.
