The saltings is an area of land that is regularly flooded when the tide is high. They are a common feature along many parts of the coast on both the east and west coasts of the Western Isles. From a distance, the green seems to be that of grass. Look more closely and you will find a dainty little plant called sea thrift (armeria maritima) which floods the saltings with pink in the summer months. The other regular feature of the saltings is the greylag geese who honk as they arrive.
