Description

Loch Dalbeg is one of Scotland’s sites of special scientific interest (SSSI). It was designated because it represents a best example of an oligotrophic (low-nutrient) or specialised coastal loch habitats. Shell sand, rich in calcium carbonate, has blown in the loch over the millennia, reducing the natural acidity of the peaty loch and enabling a wide variety of flora and fauna to flourish. In July and August, this is evident in the carpet of lilies that covers almost the entire surface.
