Description

People have been building stone cairns pretty well as long as there have been people. Sometimes, they are functional things such as way markers – and then there are the flat-topped cairns on the coffin trail on Harris, where people rested the casket as they carried it from the rocky terrain on the east side to the graveyards on the west side. Other times, they mark the top of a hill or the spot of an important event. Often, however, they have a different significance. My Dad worked on the Queen Mary when I was a lad, criss-crossing the North Atlantic. So, my son Iain and I decided to build this cairn for him on the clifftop on Croft 6, looking out over that very ocean. I think he would have approved.
