In Gaelic, the name of the storm beach on Croft 6, Dalbeg, is Geodha na Muic. Geodha is the Norse word, adopted like so many in the Outer Hebrides from many years of Viking occupation, for a sharp cleft in the coastline. And muic is the Gaelic for pig. So, we thought we had our very own Bay of Pigs – ask someone in the 60s or 70s and they’ll tell you all about the connotations that has! Then, a very learned lady came to afternoon tea one day and explained that the Gaelic for a whale is the English equivalent of ‘sea pig’. This was how we found out that our bay of pigs is actually the bay of whales – so much more romantic!
