Description

If you are ever travelling along the west coast of Lewis, a quick detour to the restored Black House village at Gearrannan will reward in so many ways.  A group of original black houses has been restored to the way it looked in the late 1950s and provides a really interesting insight into what it must have been like to live in them at that time.  I remember visiting with my parents and, at one point, my Dad complimented our guide on the attention to detail but suggested that they had missed something.  “Every house had a cobbler’s last in those days to carry out their own shoe repairs.”  The guide smiled quietly, reached up to the ledge that ran round the periphery of the inside and said, “You mean one of these!”
