Old wooden doors have always fascinated me; the older and more gnarled, the better. And this one called to me on one of my trips to St Kilda. I can only imagine where the broad planks came from, because it certainly was not from a tree felled on Hirta. A wrecked sailing ship, perhaps, or cargo washed overboard in a storm? The latching mechanism is ingenious, constructed again from scavenged pieces of that most valuable of commodities: wood. And what lay behind that required a door, when the other cleits have a simple portal? The answer may lie in the fact that this waspurported to be the residence of one Lady Grange for 6 years in the 18th Century. Check out the story online.
