Description

This is another one of the cleits on St Kilda that seems to defy gravity, seemingly balanced on the very edge of the skyline.  We tend to think of sustainable building as a modern concept, creating structures from the materials at hand rather than transporting them from faraway places.  Clearly, this is not the case.  As I sat below, doing my pencil sketch, I was reminded of what a discouraging site an impregnable castle must have made to those who sought to capture it.  Cleits were never built as defensive structures.  They remain, however, under constant siege from the forces of nature.
