Description

Dun Carloway is what remains of an Iron Age broch or fortified dwelling that was built sometime between 100BC and 100AD.  This sort of design is only found in Scotland and are examples of some of the most sophisticated dry stone architecture ever created.  Their origin and precise purpose is still the subject of fierce debate amongst archaeologists.  The view that is currently favoured is that a hybrid culture of immigrants and native Hebrideans developed the design themselves and that they were built as the equivalent of a country house, designed to demonstrate wealth, power and status.
