Description

Parmelia saxatilis, the bright yellow lichen in the foreground of this watercolour, is called crotal by the islanders and was used in days gone by to dye Harris Tweed in the vibrant colours for which it is known. It thrives in locations with high rainfall and humidity, like the location of St Kilda in the North Atlantic Ocean. Its presence in an ecosystem generally indicates very clean air, because it is intolerant of the nitrogen-based pollutants produced by, amongst other things, internal combustion engines. I love it because it provides a pop of colour in what can otherwise be a grey vista.
