Description

The Factor’s House probably dates to the latter half of the 19th century and was occupied by the factor, the landlord’s managing agent, when he came to Hirta each summer to collect the rents. The building also provided accommodation for the schoolteacher and the nurse, as well as the more notable visitors to the island.  Whilst there was still a military presence on the islands, from 1957 until the mid-1970s, the army used the Factor’s House as an officers’ mess.  Today, National Trust for Scotland staff and researchers use it as accommodation.
