The term navy blue comes from the dark blue uniforms adopted by the British Royal Navy in 1748, initially called “marine blue,” and later popularised globally as other navies followed suit. Indigo was generally the dye used because it was immune to the effects of sun and salt water, making it ideal for sea duty, while its dark nature concealed dirt and wear.
