Description

The last occupants of No. 7 Main Street were Finlay Gillies, his widowed daughter-in-law, Catherine Gillies, and her two sons, Donald (12) and Ewan (8). At 72 years of age, Finlay was the oldest inhabitant on St Kilda at the time of the evacuation. No. 7 was one of 16 cottages built around 1861, which were occupied until the island was evacuated on August 29, 1930, when life and living had become untenable for the small remaining community. This testimony to his presence was painted on an old roof slate. You can see the remains on the right-hand side of the hole where it was originally attached to the roof structure.
