Description

Until the start of the 20th century, there were literally hundreds of grain mills scattered throughout the islands of the Outer Hebrides.  They tend to be called Norse Mills as they were probably brought into Britain by the Vikings.  However, their other name is a Greek Mill and the original design is thought to date back to 400BC.  Most of the Norse mills have fallen into disrepair.  However, this one at Shawbost was first restored in the late 1960s and then again in 1995 and is a wonderful window into the past.  It is accompanied by a kiln where the grain was dried before milling; and a mill race at the top of the hill channelled the water into the mill.  Well worth the short walk from the road.
