Description

One time, standing above the beach at Dalbeg, I remember asking a dear friend who, sadly, is no longer with us, why every seventh wave was always bigger than the rest. “Now, there’s a question,” he replied with his trademark smile. He was a hydrodynamicist by vocation and one of his favourite things was wave motion. He explained that some of our waves started life all the way across the other side of the Atlantic and, as they journey to our side, the sometimes fall into sync and then fall out again. And when they eventually make landfall, and they are in sync, we get the bigger waves which might actually be two or three waves doing their thing together. So good to have an expert on hand.
