Description

Traigh na Beirghe, which means beach of the promontory, is better known as Reef Beach. It is a stunning, mile-long strand of nearly-white sand, and is much loved by visitors and locals alike. Perhaps less well-known is the fact that it is one of only four sites in the Outer Hebrides designated as a Special Area of Conservation for its machair ecosystem. Machair is the Gaelic word for ‘fertile plain’ where the fertility comes from crushed shell sand being blown onto the peat land behind the beach. Peat is acidic; so the shell sand reduces the acidity enabling a profusion of wild flowers to grow throughout the spring and summer months.
