Description

Calanais is an enigma in every way. The cross-shaped setting of standing stones is supposed to have been erected sometime between 3000 and 2200 BC and is one of the most spectacular megalithic monuments in the world. It is also supposed that its purpose was as a prehistoric lunar observatory or perhaps a place of worship. There is even debate about the meaning of the name itself, perhaps meaning Kali’s headland, after the Norse given name meaning cold or frozen. But then it might have been none of these things. As we said, an enigma!
