The cleits on St Kilda are so numerous that it is all too easy to stop really ‘seeing’ them. You walk on, past yet another cleit, and barely notice its sturdy presence. However, each one is a monument to the ingenuity and hard labour of people in a bygone age. Single out a cleit, any cleit, and transport it to a location on the mainland and it would certainly be a major attraction. Yet on St Kilda, it is just one more building amongst the throng.
