Description

This is what remains of the blackhouse on Croft 6, a building that has been lived in, off and on, for perhaps 500 years or more. It originally had rounded ends, characteristic of the earlier Viking settlements – you can see where they used to cut into the hill beyond the south gable. It was then modernised at some point with the addition of a square gable and a very modern accessory, a chimney! It was uninhabited from the mid 1850s, when Dalbeg was cleared for the second time, until 1923 when the village was resettled. I have since rebuilt the broken-down walls and so this watercolour stands as a snapshot in time until, in centuries to come, the blackhouse once again falls into disrepair.
