Description

St Kilda is renowned for the stone cleits or storage buildings that you see in this watercolour.  However, the St Kildans were very accomplished civil engineers and turned their building skills to many other projects besides.  As you might expect, St Kilda gets more than its fair share of rain and, on occasion, this can be so heavy as to cause flash flooding.  So, in an effort to minimise damage and water ingress, they built a complex arrangement of stone drains, culverts and underground watercourses.  Here, the Dry Burn is mostly dry; but in bad weather, it can be a raging torrent!
