If you look skyward on a clear day in Dalbeg, you will often see the thin, serried ranks of wispy cirrocumulus clouds, which collectively are called a mackerel sky because they resemble the vivid patterns on that fish’s flanks. These clouds form at altitudes above 20,000 feet, and are composed primarily of ice crystals and sometimes supercooled water. They are so insubstantial and ephemeral that they cast no shadows, yet they create an indelible impression. They often accompany fair, cold weather, but can augur an unwelcome change. Lower-level altocumulus clouds can create a similar spectacle but have the same moniker.
